Howard, half of the Bellamy Brothers, explains his love for reggae music.
The country duo, Bellamy Brothers, collaborated with The Bacon Brothers for their latest single, "Guilty of the Crime."

I'm not country music fan by any means. There is one album, however, that snuck into my iPod -- a 1982 greatest hits collection by The Bellamy Brothers. I'm not exactly sure how it got there. Maybe I was drawn to the cheap pickup lines ("If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold it Against Me?"), the upbeats ("Reggae Cowboy") or the romance ("Red Neck Girl"). Whatever the reason, I couldn't have been more excited to spend a few minutes on the phone with big brother Howard.

The Bellamys have always been ahead of their time. They were mixing pop, rock, and even reggae into their country hits decades before Little-Miss-Crossover Hannah Montana was even born. The diversity wasn't a result of a marketing gimmick, just a by-product of growing up on a ranch in central Florida.

Papa Bellamy introduced the boys to plenty of old country and rockabilly. He was also indirectly responsibility for their love of reggae. "Our dad had an orange grove," Bellamy recalls. "The Jamaicans would come over in the fall and we'd harvest oranges with them and hear all this island music. It rubbed off on us."

The brothers' biggest hit came in 1976 with "Let Your Love Flow," a pop/rock song that reached number one in 15 countries. More than 30 years later, the band is still going strong and "Let Your Love Flow" has come full circle. The track was recently the most downloaded song in the UK, thanks to an appearance on a credit card commercial.

"Our demographic has always been quite broad," Bellamy says of their fan base. "Oddly enough, we gain a new, young crop each year -- especially college kids. That keeps us young. We've always tried to stay current with new ideas, new ways to record, and subject matter than hasn't been written about."

The band's latest single, "Guilty of the Crime," is a collaboration with another set of siblings, The Bacon Brothers. After meeting at the Sturgis motorcycle rally, both parties realized they had more in common than just the family band approach.

"We had a lot of the same musical interests and we asked them to record with us," Bellamy says. "Kevin's acting career has been so big over the years that the music part has never been exposed. He's definitely passionate about music and [the song] has been kicking up a lot of dust."

The song's heavy rotation on CMT and GAC may be thanks in part to another celebrity, the video's leading lady Shannen Doherty. "It seemed like the perfect role for her -- in a prison cell, throwing a tantrum," Bellamy jokes. "We spent one hot day in a prison in Memphis with Shannen Doherty and the Bacon Brothers. It was an unexpected team."

More than 35 years into their career, when the video shoots, recording sessions, or tours are over, the brothers still head back to the same ranch where they grew up. "Our mom is 85 and still signs our live date contracts. Family has been important to us and continues to be. I think our whole country could stand to have stronger families."

Next to their family, the band's fans have almost meant the most to them. They tour the U.S. constantly and head to Europe twice each year. "It's really hard as an artist to understand why anyone likes you at all," Bellamy adds with a laugh. "But you certainly appreciate the fact that they do."
