Album Review: Back Spacer, Pearl Jam
Posted 2009-09-22 10:31:35 by Spencer Sutherland
When Pearl Jam released its self-titled album in 2006, critics and fans everywhere were quick to herald it as the band's return to glory. The record wasn't actually that good; it was just more rockin' than the band had been in years. "Back Spacer" really is a change. It's the band's punkiest effort to date and also the most pop-leaning. The result is a record made by 40-year-olds that sounds like it could have been made by 20-year-old. This is fitting, I suppose, since as 20-year-olds, Pearl Jam wanted to sound like they were 40. The only downside to this "Back Spacer," is that rather than error on the side of punk rock ADD, they settle for adult bipolar disorder. Mixed in with the jubilant "The Fixer" are a slew of soft ballads that deflate the record's overall bounce. Despite some missteps, it is great to hear Pearl Jam attempt to grab onto a youth they never really had.
