Scene in SLC: Marcus Wing

Marcus Wing spins hip-hop on Thursdays at Studio 600, a non-alcoholic dance club at 26 E. 600 South.

What's your DJ name? I have always gone by my given name, Marcus Wing. I want people to know me without having to tell them I DJ.

How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as high energy. People often leave my events sweaty. I like to think of my self as a "Party Rocker."

What are some of your favorite songs to play right now, and why? I have some really cool remixes of "Hotel Room" by Pitbull, "I Got a Feeling," by Black Eyed Peas, and some hands-up sort of songs. I really like playing songs that the crowd can sing the chorus to.

Where and when can we hear you spin? Thursday nights at Studio 600, and I do a monthly theme party on the third Friday of the month.

How and when did you get started DJing? Three years ago I was promoting events and would hire DJs to play at them. I had a really hard time finding guys who would "rock a party" to my expectations. So I decided to do it myself. I bought gear over time and was taught the basics and added my flair. I didn't know it would take off like it has.

What do you think it takes to be a good DJ? Being able to read a crowd, knowing what will make them jump, what will make them scream, and what songs will make them go crazy. Delivery is huge!

What do you think are the biggest challenges of being a DJ? Keeping fresh. So many DJs get stuck in a rut and will mix to a point where the regular crowd knows what song's coming next. You have to mix it up but play what people want to hear or get them to like what you play.

Do you think it's harder to get a crowd going at a non-alcoholic venue like Studio 600? Ha! Not in Utah. There's a niche for it here. Especially once they realize it ain't a stake dance with a 14-year-old rocking a iPod. Word spreads quick!

What are some of the best moments you've had as a DJ? Many! I can honestly say I love my job and when I DJ it isn't just work but a passion to make people "blow up"! Just last week I did a gig at Snow College where the kids rushed the stage for the last song and went so crazy the stage collapsed!

What are your future goals? Keep supporting my family doing what I love. I am working on my own remixes and want to start building my name by producing.

Got any special events coming up? "Dance Party Neon" Halloween edition on Oct. 16 at Studio 600 and Hallowfunkaween @ The Rail (235 N. 500 West) on Oct. 23.
