Album Review: Sainthood, Tegan and Sara
Posted 2009-11-02 14:43:51 by Spencer Sutherland

Sainthood Tegan and Sara

For Fans Of » Meg & Dia, Rilo Kiley

After toning things down a bit on their last record, identical twins Tegan and Sara Quin ratchet up the intensity on their sixth album, "Sainthood." The tone is established immediately, with the edgy synths and pointed lyrics of the first track, "Arrow." The album continues in this vein, nicely pushing and pulling between weighty verses and catchy choruses. The best moments come when the Quin girls up the tempo. "Hell" finds the twins busting out their rock guitars and "Northshore" unleashes their inner surf punks. The unfortunate byproduct of the identical twin-dom is the identical voices that, when combined, can become incredibly grating. Fortunately, Tegan and Sara are more careful with the duets on this record, generally staying out of the dog pitches, without losing their signature sound.
