Album Review: Islands, The Mary Onettes

Islands The Mary Onettes

For Fans Of » Ride, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Killers

It's hard to figure where The Mary Onettes fit in. They aren't traditional synthpop and they don't exactly fit into either the shoegazing or dream pop genres. This isn't a bad thing. I prefer it this way. It just makes "Lost" rather difficult to accurately write about. So imagine if 4AD-era Clan of Xymox were to abandon the darkness for a brighter sound and a more straightforward vocal (vocalist Philip Ekstrom has drawn comparisons to a-ha's Morten Harket). I suppose this lumps the group in with the likes of The Bravery, but to my ear they're far better in that they have the sincerity that many of the post-punk hijackers lack. The Mary Onettes have also captured the odd balance of melancholy lyrics mixed with a more uplifting sound. This places them amongst a finer caliber of groups that include New Order and Depeche Mode (there's even a dash of The Smiths to be found in the track "Dare"). Interested? You should be.
