Album Review: Toussaint St. Jean: From the Hut, To the Projects, To the Mansion, Wyclef Jean

Toussaint St. Jean: From the Hut, To the Projects, To the Mansion Wyclef Jean

For Fans Of » The Fugees, Black Eyed Peas

Most musicians would kill for a resume like Wyclef Jean's -- founder of the ultra-important Fugees, multi-platinum selling solo artist, and producer/songwriter for acts ranging from Michael Jackson to Mick Jagger. But apparently, Wyclef feels the need to add one more thing to the list -- Hardcore rapper. On "Toussaint St. Jean," Jean puts down his guitar, grabs the mic, and flexes his rhyming skills. It's not unusual for Jean to reinvent himself -- not just from album to album, but often from track to track -- so it comes as a surprise that he is able to commit himself exclusively to hip-hop for a full record. That's not to say Wyclef has suddenly become one-dimensional. The mixtape-style presentation allows to rap with Cyndi Lauper one minute ("Slumdog Millionaire") and the always-overly-graphic Li'l Kim the next ("Gangsta Girl"). Though 'Clef certainly proves himself an impressive emcee, "Toussaint St. Jean" could use a bit more of Jean's usual eccentricities.
