Album Review: In and Out of Control, Raveonettes

In and Out of Control Raveonettes

For Fans Of » Ting Tings, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

There has always been two sides to Swedish duo The Raveonettes. There's the sweet, 1950's bubblegum sound and the love of dark electronic noise. On their fifth album, they find the perfect balance between the two.

The best example is the impeccable "Last Dance." With its sweet boy-girl vocals, incredibly catchy chorus ("If this is the last dance, save it for me, baby") and retro organ solo, it seems like it was made specifically for a mixtape for your junior high girlfriend. But pay a little attention to the lyrics and you'll find that the "last dance" is more than the final song at the prom. ("And every time you overdose I rush to intensive care/Another sad eye stare before you disappear.") The group's juxtaposition of heavy and light is even more stark when Sharin Foo angelically sings "Boys who...rape should...all be...destroyed."

What makes "In and Out of Control" so good is that it sound both comfortably familiar and refreshingly new. Here's hoping this is not the Raveonettes last dance.
