Album Review: Build Me This, Joshua James
Posted 2009-12-08 13:55:59 by Spencer Sutherland

Build Me This Joshua James

For Fans Of » Ben Harper, Ray LaMontagne

Joshua James may no longer claim his Utah roots, but the Beehive State would be wise to claim him. James, the once-local-Utah-artist, is getting nothing but love for his second album, "Build Me This."

The record's folky Americana is filled with bursts of southern rock and backporch gospel. However, his unique voice -- imagine if Ben Harper and Tracy Chapman had a white baby with a slight lisp -- is really the standout instrument. Whether it's big and boisterous ("Coal War") or purposefully diminutive ("Wilted Daisies"), his voice is equally impressive. While the louder tracks keep the record moving, the strongest tracks turn down the volume. "Pitchfork" successfully builds from a whisper to a hallelujah and "Annabelle" is a bluegrass delight.

Oh Joshua, come back home.
