Album Review: Cokie the Clown, NOFX

Cokie the Clown NOFX

For Fans Of » Lagwagon, Bad Religion

Just eight months after the release of "Coaster," NOFX is back with a new EP and a new alter ego for Fat Mike. While "Coaster" was a self-deprecating look at singer/bassist Mike Burnett's struggle with alcoholism, the leftover "Coaster" tracks take things a step further. For the title track, Fat Mike becomes Cokie, the clown who's always out to have a drug-induced good time. "I'm sure you'll have fun/Watching me juggle eight balls at a time/This squirting flour/That blew up your nose/It's my special blend of X, coke, and K." He continues to face his addiction by laughing at it on "Codependence Day" as he sings "Self-caused afflictions/Magnified with chemical addictions/We're on a date/We get to celebrate codependence day." The jokes come as no surprise, seeing that NOFX hasn't stopped laughing in 20 years, but there is one shocking moment on the EP. "My Orphan Year" (an acoustic version of the "Coaster" track) finds Fat Mike using a new tool, sincerity, as he mourns the loss of his mother and offers a final send-off to his absent father. It's a nice change of pace.
