This Week IN Comics: Captain America
Posted 2010-02-10 14:30:59 by

The biggest news coming out of the comics world in the last week or so has been the building of buzz for "The First Avenger: Captain America." The film, set for release in the summer of next year, has a lot riding on it.

Some of you may not know or realize that starting in 2008 with "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk," Marvel Studios has been building all of their flagship characters from the Avengers stories into an Avengers film. This year, "Iron Man 2" kicks off a four-film sprint through 2011's "Thor" and "Captain America" and comes together in 2012's "Avengers."

Quite a few of you reading this probably have never heard of Iron Man before the film starring Robert Downey, Jr. and it's probably a similar number of you who haven't really heard of or know much about Cap. Just as a quick primer, Captain America was a super-soldier created by the government in World War II. He made his first appearance punching Hitler in the face. During the conflict, he was encased in ice and preserved there until Nick Fury (played in the films by Samuel L. Jackson) and S.H.I.E.L.D. find and thaw him, installing him as the head of the Avengers.

By all accounts, the Captain America we'll see in the film as the prelude to the Avengers movie will take place during World War II and, presumably, take us up to the point where he's encased in ice.

The thing I'm expecting is that this film will become every bit as popular as "Iron Man" has become and we'll be clamoring for more Cap the same way we have for Iron Man. And to see them together, along with Thor in one movie in 2012 might just overload my circuits.

You realize you didn't sum up original Cap's history, but rather the alternate 'Ultimate' universe Cap's history, right?

The original Cap, who first appeared in comics in 1941, fell into the ocean after a plane exploded and was frozen until the Avengers discovered him and welcomed him onto their team. Sometimes he lead the Avengers, sometimes he didn't, as they had a rotating leadership position.

Ultimate Cap first appeared in comics in 2002. The Ultimate universe was created as a re-imagined reboot of the original Marvel universe. Many of the characters are vastly different. The Avengers team is vastly different in the Ultimate universe, as Tony Stark is dying of cancer, Bruce Banner intentionally turns into the Hulk and eats people, and Hank Pym regularly beats his wife, Janet. Also, as you mentioned, the team is put together by Nick Fury, rather than assembled by themselves as is in the original universe.
