Ever miss the weirdness of '90s alternative rock radio, with all its genre mix-and-matching? Boy/girl duo Phantogram are a beautiful throwback to the trip-hop days, with their hip-hop beats and dark, sultry synths. Sarah Barthel and Joshua Carter trade vocal duties throughout -- Carter's vocals tend to skew more rock and more cryptic, and Barthel's slither through the speakers. The record is generally mid-tempo, but flourishes of synth horns and hip hop guitar keep things lively. Phantogram have successful taken the early '90s and made them new again. --Spencer Sutherland
