Album Review: Stretch That Skull Cover and Smile, Cub Country

Stretch That Skull Cover and Smile Cub Country

For Fans Of » Wilco, Band of Annuals

After wandering from coast to coast, Cub Country frontman and former Jets to Brazil bassist Jeremy Chatelain has come back home to Salt Lake City. He's brought with him echoes of former locales. The alt-country of his North Carolina days remain, and the West Coast rock influences are just apparent. The result is a record that feels just as comfortable being strummed on the back porch as blaring out of '90s college rock radio. Chatelain's voice is perfectly unpolished throughout and is even more impressive when paired with complementary harmonies. Whether it's the dark simplicity of "Dear Ghost of Angie Lee" or the pop sensibilities of "A Northern Passage," everything feels like home.
