DVD Review: Killer at Large

Killer at Large
To say that obesity amongst America's youth is a growing epidemic is not only a terrible pun it's a terrifying truth that no amount of "Wii Fit" is going to cure. "Killer at Large" is more than a retread of "Super Size Me" as that it traces back to the modern origins of the problem and the trail doesn't start at McDonalds (although it certainly makes a stop there), but in the farmlands and governmental policies. From the excessive use of processed corn to the government's inability to admit that exercise without a change of diet isn't going to save us from ourselves.
Obesity is a topic that no film could possibly tackle in one sitting and thankfully "Killer at Large" doesn't try to cover every angle. Instead it focuses primarily on the way food is marketed and readily made available to America's youth. From Saturday morning commercials, school cafeterias, misguided governmental programs and cosmetic surgery, "Killer at Large" effectively points out a handful of issues that sit before us in plain sight that we refuse to see. It will shock, frustrate and bewilder you as it tries to explain why, in our age of enlightenment, our children are expected to have a shorter lifespan than we do.
