CD Review: Jimmy Eat World, 'Clarity Live'

Jimmy Eat World, 'Clarity Live'

For fans of: Get Up Kids, Dashboard Confessional

To celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the release of their emo masterpiece "Clarity," Jimmy Eat World performed the album in its entirety in 10 cities across the U.S. "Clarity Live" was recorded at the finale show in their hometown of Phoenix.

Live albums rarely live up to their studio counterparts. Sure, it's interesting enough to see how arrangements change and what songs a band chooses to play, but neither applies here as the band plays the record start to finish with little variation from the original.

But it doesn't matter. Notes are missed and harmonies fall in and out of tune, but the songs are so good that the little imperfections just make the recording more endearing. Though a few songs seem a bit dated ("Your New Aesthetic," "Blister"), the album's best numbers ("Lucky Denver Mint," "Just Watch the Fireworks," "Goodbye Sky Harbor") are just as engaging as they were a decade ago.

On "For Me This is Heaven," singer Jim Adkins asks, "Can you still feel the butterflies?" The answer is a resounding yes.
