CD Review: 311, 'Uplifter'
Posted 2009-06-08 15:12:41 by Spencer Sutherland
If you spent any time being a teenager in the mid-'90s, you likely have a soft spot in your heart for 311. Their mix of rap, reggae and rock was the perfect complement for bleached blond hair, Adidas soccer shoes and thinking about aliens.
Though the rap/rock era has gone the way of the buffalo, 311 has managed to stay in the game. "Uplifter" isn't likely to score the band hordes of new fans, but it shows they are willing to update their style without distancing themselves too far from their roots.
Nick Hexum and crew devote little time to straight-up rap/rock, generally choosing to keep things a little more laid back. "Golden Sunlight" is the 311 version of a power ballad (and highlights the importance of SA Martinez as the high harmony guy), and "My Heart Sings" could be the soundtrack for a Sandals Jamaica getaway. There are, however, a few minutes of metal mayhem, including the blazing guitar solo on "Endless Summer" and the chunky riff of "Something Out of Nothing."
Though the record isn't outstanding, there are a handful of tracks that will be great additions to the set list of the band's never-ending tour schedule.
