CD Review: Taking Back Sunday, 'New Again'

Taking Back Sunday

'New Again'

For fans of: Brand New, Senses Fail

The usual emo success story goes like this: make a record that shows all of your deep-seated emotional vulnerability; watch as millions of teenage girls fall in love with it (and critics rip it to pieces); make an over-the-top follow-up filled with marching bands and gospel choirs to prove you're a "legitimate artist"; sit back and wonder where all the fans have gone.

Taking Back Sunday have never fallen into that trap. Rather than divorce themselves from what made them popular in the first place, they have simply focused on refining their sound and improving their songwriting with each release. "New Again" is no exception.

The title track is punchy and shouty, "Lonely, Lonely" is fast and riffy, and "Sink Into Me" has the lyrics that drive girls crazy ("I'd like to be a note/The kind you could sing but don't because you're shy/That way I live inside your throat/And hang from every word you spoke"). And though there are a few lesser moments ("Cut Me Up Jenny," "Carpathia") there are plenty of big choruses throughout the album to make up for it.

Taking Back Sunday have proven that the emo tag doesn't have to stop you from being a great rock band.

It's their best record to date and my favorite album of the year so far. I'm listening to this non stop since I've bought it.
