CD Review: So Many Dynamos, 'The Loud Wars'
Posted 2009-06-22 16:17:38 by Spencer Sutherland
The best track on the third LP by St. Louis quartet So Many Dynamos is "Keep It Simple." The irony is that nothing on this album is simple. At first glance, the band resembles many of its keyboard-driven dance rock counterparts. But just below the surface is a group of incredibly talented, prog-leaning math rockers.
Fortunately, the virtuosity doesn't get in the way of the album's danceability. Singer Aaron Stovall also manages to take on weighty lyrical matter without sounding foreboding. Standout track, "The Formula," (like much of the album) is about the world collapsing all around us, but with its fuzzy bass synths, it still makes a great party anthem.
There are a few moments when the Dynamos sound a bit more like the typical Vagrant Records emo band. On "New Bones," Stovall plays the role of tortured teenage boyfriend when he sings "I put the breath in your lungs/And I'll take it back if I want/I'll pour the water that floods your trachea." Fortunately, the overly dramatic hyperbole is forgivable because the tune is just so darn catchy.
If you're a sucker for angular guitars and dance beats, this is a band you should check out.
