CD Review: The Lemonheads, 'Varshons'
Posted 2009-06-22 16:24:21 by Spencer Sutherland

The Lemonheads

'Varshons'

For fans of: Juliana Hatfield, Dinosaur Jr.

Lemonheads leader Evan Dando has always been a fan of cover songs -- the biggest hit in the band's 23-year career was a remake of Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson." So it's not surprising that The Lemonheads would eventually put out a covers album. The song selection is what is a bit curious.

Normally, a record like this is filled with long-time band favorites. "Varshons," however, is a tribute to the years' worth of mix tapes given to Dando by Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes, who also produced the album.

Haynes' picks include an obscure tune by garage rockers The Green Fuz, a piece of sleepy psychedelia from Sam Gopol, and a little misogyny from G.G. Allin. The strangest, and most interesting, moment is a beep-boop techno duet with Kate Moss called "Dirty Robot."

Though the track listing is too random to find much cohesion, a few songs shine through. Gram Parsons' "I Just Can't Take It Anymore" has all of the soft-hearted sincerity of mid-90s Lemonheads classics, and Linda Perry's "Beautiful" (made famous by Christina Aguilera) is quite impressive in its sincerity. Overall, this is an interesting release for fans, but nothing to write home about.
