Taste of Chaos prides itself on being the Warped Tour of the winter. The mini festival takes Warped's bigness, crams it all into a little club, and then pummels the crowd with post-hardcore delight. Fans hoping to simultaneously exorcise their demons and mend their emo hearts will scowl with joy at this year's lineup. Thursday -- always a fan favorite -- is sounding better than they have in years and Decaydence Record's Four Year Strong will make the ladies blush.
Another band to watch is British import Bring Me the Horizon. The band is making their Taste of Chaos debut on the heels of their relentlessly hardcore release "Suicide Season." IN caught up with BMTH guitarist Curtis Ward right before the tour kicked off in Los Angeles.
IN Utah This Week: So, what exactly does chaos taste like?
Curtis Ward: Quite a lot like sweet chili sauce --- sugary but with a bit of heat. Chaos is hot.
IN: If Bring Me the Horizon were a meal, what food is each member of the band?
CW: Matt Kean (bass) would be a bread stick because he's tall and very dry -- but dip him in a sauce and things liven up. Lee Malia (guitar) would be some sort of cheese, because he likes cheese. Matt Nicholls (drums) would be a Cumberland sausage. Oliver Sykes (vocals) would be a lemon.
IN: As the out-of-towners, do other bands ever tease you for eating weird things?
CW: We just tend to eat whatever's given to us when we're out here, so we never seem to get any reactions to what we're eating. I'd love some beans on toast though; is that weird?
IN: What's the rock scene like in your hometown? Do you guys fit in there?
CW: There isn't much of one at all, but we were never there to see if there was one. When we first started we weren't very welcome in our hometown. Everywhere else seemed to like us, though. We seem to have a lot more fans now in our hometown.
IN: How is touring life different in the U.S. than in Europe?
CW: It's hotter over here so we get to hang out outside a lot more and do cool stuff we wouldn't get to do back home, like go to the beach and have barbecues. But the venues here often don't have showers, so you have to go for like a week without a shower sometimes, which sucks.
IN: With so many good bands on the Taste of Chaos bill, is there friendly competition to outdo each other?
CW: Yeah, you definitely feel like you have to play the best set you can to make your band stand out from all the rest. But at the same time, you want all the other bands to have an amazing set, too.
Note to BMTH fans: Wanting to get "in" with the band? Just bring cheese, sausages, beans on toast, and a hot shower to the show. You'll make friends forever.
